Power Station Planner: Plan your power for the road, the trail, and the next outage

We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page. (Details)

Plain-English guides for RV owners, van lifers, campers and anyone who loses power in a mountain storm. Start with what you actually need to run. The brand comes after that.

How this site works: We have not hands-on tested these products. Every guide is built from manufacturer spec sheets and manuals plus basic electrical math, and we show our sources and dates. Where a spec isn't published, we say so rather than guess.

Start with your situation

The three numbers that matter

Capacity (Wh)How much energy is stored. It decides how long things run.
Output (W)How much can run at the same time.
Surge (W)The short burst needed to start motors and compressors (fridges, pumps, power tools).

Most buying mistakes come from mixing up the first two. A unit with 1,800 W of output but only 1,000 Wh of storage can run a 1,500 W kettle, but only for about half an hour.
